Eco G Painters’ Tips for Picking the Best House Painter

Early summer is one of the best times to have your house painted in San Diego. The low humidity and lack of rain (typically, but this spring has been anything but typical) and warm but not blazing temps ensures the best painting conditions. Small wonder it’s one of our busiest times of the year.

For the homeowner, finding the best house painter can be difficult, but it is oh so important. While the temptation to shop by price is strong, especially in these economic times, it often leads to a paint job that won’t make you happy. Sure, a bad contractor will cost less, but he keeps his margins down by cutting corners on the vital prep work and by using inferior quality paint. (We only use top shelf eco-friendly paints. They might cost a little more but last longer while retaining their appearance.) A great painting contractor will do a job that looks great for ten years or so (depending on the climate), while a bad job will have you going through the whole process again in five years.

Three Tips To Finding a Better House Painter

  1. Ask for References…and Call Them. Ask the references if the contractor met his timelines and the budget—and how well they cleaned up after they were done. If you have the time, go to see some of his work. Look closely for drips (poor workmanship) or paint that is already bubbling (a sign that he didn’t let the wood dry completely before the final coat).
  2. Don’t Shop by Price. As I mentioned, there are plenty of ways to cut corners (cheap paint, poor prep), and none of them are good for you. You’ll end up paying more in the long run for a bad paint job.
  3. Don’t Shop by Deadline. A good house painting takes time, especially in the preparation before the first coat is even applied. If the contractor makes a promise too good to be true when it comes to a deadline…it is.

Good luck and happy hunting!
