To Paint San Diego, Choose a San Diego Painter

Which is to say, local knowledge is very important when picking a painting contractor. Humidity, temperature, rain/snow, and UV and saltwater exposure (especially in coastal San Diego) all play an important role in when and how a house or commercial building is painted. That’s why it’s wise to choose a painter who has verifiable experience in your particular micro climate.

Excessive humidity can cause paint to bubble and peel if not properly applied. Large temperature swings might dictate the use of elastomeric paints that will flex with the expansion and contraction of the substrate building materials. In areas where rust might be an issue, such as on the beach where saltwater permeates the air, epoxy polyurethane coatings work best for metal surfaces. Typically this product makes a good choice for exposed structural steel and architectural metals that are exposed to moisture. If you’re in an area with generous sun exposure, a lighter color might be advisable to cut down on cooling costs—your contractor should suggest this.

Of course, you’re smart, so you’ll ask for references before retaining any painting contractor, but ask for references in your area or any area with a similar climate. Even better, ask for homes painted a few years ago. Most paint jobs look good at first; time will separate the quality painting contractor from the pack.

Good luck!
